Traditionally, banks have been happy to pay us to keep our cash on deposit and then make money by lending it out to borrowers at higher rates. They still do that, of course, but what has happened is that the margin (the spread between deposit and lending rates) that the banks are able to earn has been squeezed as rates have reached incredibly low levels.
